Turning a backyard that isn’t being used into a veggie garden can be a good DIY project. It can provide you with fresh and organic vegetables and also give your backyard a purpose. However, it won’t be an easy task. You would need to prepare the ground of the backyard before you start planting the vegetables that you want to grow in your veggie garden. Prepping the ground and the soil would require a major overhaul of the backyard. You will need some heavy machinery and a lot of gardening tools to get this DIY project up and running.
Land Excavation
The first order of business when making a veggie garden is to excavate the land. This excavation can’t be done without hiring an excavator. If you have a large backyard then you will need a bigger excavator but if the backyard is small then a mini excavator would work just fine. Keep in mind that bigger excavators cost more and are harder to operate and manoeuver. So, you would be better off hiring a smaller excavator. It is a good idea to dry hire the mini excavator. This would help you in saving up costs so you can spend more on buying seeds and plants for decoration!
Soil Preparation
After the mini-excavator has removed all the debris and levelled the ground, the next task would be to prep the soil. The veggie garden would need the soil to be soft and fertile so that the vegetables can easily grow in it. So, you would have to dig up a hole in the ground and pour in the right soil that is conducive for vegetable growth. You will again need the services of the mini excavator to dig up this hole and also for dumping the soil into the hole. Make sure that the hole is deep enough for the roots of the vegetable plants to easily expand and grow.
Create Raised Beds
Once the soil has been prepared, you will need to begin working on the raised beds on which the vegetable plants will grow. You will have to use a garden rake for creating these raised beds. If your veggie garden is large then using a rake for creating the raised beds would be too time-consuming. In such cases, it is best to get a ploughing attachment for the mini excavator. This attachment can instantly turn the excavator into a plougher and you can use it for creating the raised beds for the vegetable plants within a few rounds. Your veggie garden would be ready once you have successfully completed these tasks. You can then start planting the vegetable you like.
